First Presbyterian Church Splits Again

First Presbyterian Church of the Shifting Causeway has split again. This time it is over hymnals. One group opposes the purchase of the Newer Blue hymnals to replace the green ones that are in obvious sad shape. “They are fine” said elder Horace Bushniell holding up a well worn copy of “The Hymnal” for this reporter to see. “Plus, those songs are eternal, as opposed to the new fangled words and tunes in the Blue Hymnal. What’s next, a guitar in the service?”

Pastor Prentice Shivers claims, “this is out of my hands. I had nothing to do with it. I have no opinion on this. It is between session members and the Blue hymnal contingent won by one vote (with me abstaining). I just want things to go back to the way they were before.”

The way they were before was a split over whether an olive tree in the courtyard should be cut down or not. One side contended it was messing up the foundation, while the other claimed it was brought on a boat from the Holy land. Before that there was a split over Sunday School material, Pastor Jenkin’s compensation, the Church bus and whether to seat in the congregation African-Americans in the 1970’s.

There are 6 churches that seperated from First Church. Three have closed their doors.

and has Pastor Jenkins put his PIF out? someone has to pay for this upheaval, we’ll all stay as we always do, so if we get a new one of those we’ll be JUST fine again
